Chris Hedges: Israel, the Big Lie
By Chris Hedges / Original to ScheerPost
Nearly all the words and phrases used by the Democrats, Republicans and the talking heads on the media to describe the unrest inside Israel and the heaviest Israeli assault against the Palestinians since the 2014 attacks on Gaza, which lasted 51 days and killed more than 2,200 Palestinians, including 551 children, are a lie. Israel, by employing its military machine against an occupied population that does not have mechanized units, an air force, navy, missiles, heavy artillery and command-and-control, not to mention a U.S. commitment to provide a $38 billion defense aid package for Israel over the next decade, is not exercising “the right to defend itself.” It is carrying out mass murder. It is a war crime.
Israel has made it clear it is ready to destroy and kill as wantonly now as it was in 2014. Israel’s defense minister Benny Gantz, who was the chief of staff during the murderous assault on Gaza in 2014, has vowed that if Hamas “does not stop the violence, the strike of 2021 will be harder and more painful than that of 2014.” The current attacks have already targeted several residential high rises including buildings that housed over a dozen local and international press agencies, government buildings, roads, public facilities, agricultural lands, two schools and a mosque.
I spent seven years in the Middle East as a correspondent, four of them as The New York Times Middle East Bureau Chief. I am an Arabic speaker. I lived for weeks at a time in Gaza, the world’s largest open-air prison where over two million Palestinians exist on the edge of starvation, struggle to find clean water and endure constant Israeli terror. I have been in Gaza when it was pounded with Israeli artillery and air strikes. I have watched mothers and fathers, wailing in grief, cradling the bloodied bodies of their sons and daughters. I know the crimes of the occupation—the food shortages caused by the Israeli blockade, the stifling overcrowding, the contaminated water, the lack of health services, the near constant electrical outages due to the Israeli targeting of power plants, the crippling poverty, the endemic unemployment, the fear and the despair. I have witnessed the carnage.
I also have listened from Gaza to the lies emanating from Jerusalem and Washington. Israel’s indiscriminate use of modern, industrial weapons to kill thousands of innocents, wound thousands more and make tens of thousands of families homeless is not a war: It is state-sponsored terror. And, while I oppose the indiscriminate firing of rockets by Palestinians into Israel, as I oppose suicide bombings, seeing them also as war crimes, I am acutely aware of a huge disparity between the industrial violence carried out by Israel against innocent Palestinians and the minimal acts of violence capable of being waged by groups such as Hamas.
The false equivalency between Israeli and Palestinian violence was echoed during the war I covered in Bosnia. Those of us in the besieged city of Sarajevo were pounded daily with hundreds of heavy shells and rockets from the surrounding Serbs. We were targeted by sniper fire. The city suffered a few dozen dead and wounded each day. The government forces inside the city fired back with light mortars and small arms fire. Supporters of the Serbs seized on any casualties caused by Bosnian government forces to play the same dirty game, although well over 90 percent of the killings in Bosnia were the fault of the Serbs, as is also true regarding Israel.
The second and perhaps most important parallel is that the Serbs, like the Israelis, were the principal violators of international law. Israel is in breach of more than 30 U.N. Security Council resolutions. It is in breach of Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention that defines collective punishment of a civilian population as a war crime. It is in violation of Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention for settling over half a million Jewish Israelis on occupied Palestinian land and for the ethnic cleansing of at least 750,000 Palestinians when the Israeli state was founded and another 300,000 after Gaza, East Jerusalem and the West Bank were occupied following the 1967 war. Its annexation of East Jerusalem and the Syrian Golan Heights violates international law, as does its building of a security barrier in the West Bank that annexes Palestinian land into Israel. It is in violation of U.N. General Assembly Resolution 194 that states that Palestinian “refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at peace with their neighbors should be permitted to do so at the earliest practicable date.”
This is the truth. Any other starting point for the discussion of what is taking place between Israel and the Palestinians is a lie.
Israel’s once vibrant peace movement and political left, which condemned and protested against the Israeli occupation when I lived in Jerusalem, is moribund. The right-wing Netanyahu government, despite its rhetoric about fighting terrorism, has built an alliance with the repressive regime in Saudi Arabia, which also views Iran as an enemy. Saudi Arabia, a country that produced 15 of the 19 hijackers in the September 11 attacks, is reputed to be the most prolific sponsor of international Islamist terrorism, allegedly supporting Salafist jihadism, the basis of al-Qaeda, and groups such as the Afghanistan Taliban, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and the Al-Nusra Front.
Saudi Arabia and Israel worked closely together to back the 2013 military coup in Egypt, led by General Adbul Fattah el Sisi. Sisi overthrew a democratically elected government. He has imprisoned tens of thousands of government critics, including journalists and human rights defenders, on politically motivated charges. The Sisi regime collaborates with Israel by keeping its common border with Gaza closed to Palestinians, trapping them in the Gaza strip, one of the most densely populated places on earth. Israel’s cynicism and hypocrisy, especially when it wraps itself in the mantle of protecting democracy and fighting terrorism, is of epic proportions.
Those who are not Jewish in Israel are either second class citizens or live under brutal military occupation. Israel is not, and never has been, the exclusive homeland of the Jewish people. From the 7th century until 1948, when Jewish colonial settlers used violence and ethnic cleansing to create the state of Israel, Palestine was overwhelmingly Muslim. It was never empty land. The Jews in Palestine were traditionally a tiny minority. The United States is not an honest broker for peace but has funded, enabled and defended Israel’s crimes against the Palestinian people. Israel is not defending the rule of law. Israel is not a democracy. It is an apartheid state.
That the lie of Israel continues to be embraced by the ruling elites–there is no daylight between statements in defense of Israeli war crimes by Nancy Pelosi and Ted Cruz–and used as a foundation for any discussion of Israel is a testament to the corrupting power of money, in this case that of the Israel lobby, and the bankruptcy of a political system of legalized bribery that has surrendered its autonomy and its principles to its major donors. It is also a stunning example of how colonial settler projects, and this is true in the United States, always carry out cultural genocide so they can exist in a suspended state of myth and historical amnesia to legitimize themselves.
The Israel lobby has shamelessly used its immense political clout to demand that Americans take de facto loyalty oaths to Israel. The passage by 35 state legislatures of Israel lobby-backed legislation requiring their workers and contractors, under threat of dismissal, to sign a pro-Israel oath and promise not to support the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement is a mockery of our Constitutional right of free speech. Israel has lobbied the U.S. State Department to redefine anti-Semitism under a three-point test known as the Three Ds: the making of statements that “demonize” Israel; statements that apply “double standards” for Israel; statements that “delegitimize” the state of Israel. This definition of anti-Semitism is being pushed by the Israel lobby in state legislatures and on college campuses. The Israel lobby spies in the United States, often at the direction of Israel’s Ministry of Strategic Affairs, on those who speak up for the rights of Palestinians. It wages public smear campaigns and blacklists defenders of Palestinian rights–including the Jewish historian Norman Finkelstein; U.N. Special Rapporteur for the Occupied Territories, Richard Falk, also Jewish; and university students, many of them Jewish, in organizations such as Students for Justice in Palestine.
The Israel lobby has spent hundreds of millions of dollars to manipulate U.S. elections, far beyond anything alleged to have been carried out by Russia, China or any other country. The heavy-handed interference by Israel in the American political system, which includes operatives and donors bundling together hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions in every U.S. congressional district to bankroll compliant candidates, is documented in the Al-Jazeera four-part series “The Lobby.” Israel managed to block “The Lobby” from being broadcast. In the film, a pirated copy that is available on the website Electronic Intifada, the leaders of the Israel lobby are repeatedly captured on a reporter’s hidden camera explaining how they, backed by the intelligence services within Israel, attack and silence American critics and use massive cash donations to buy politicians. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu secured the unconstitutional invitation by then-House Speaker John Boehner to address Congress in 2015 to denounce President Barack Obama’s Iranian nuclear agreement. Netanyahu’s open defiance of Obama and alliance with the Republican Party, however, did not stop Obama in 2014 from authorizing a 10-year $38 billion military aid package to Israel, a sad commentary on how captive American politics is to Israeli interests.
The investment by Israel and its backers is worth it, especially when you consider that the U.S. has also spent over $ 6 trillion during the last 20 years fighting futile wars that Israel and its lobby pushed for in the Middle East. These wars are the greatest strategic debacle in American history, accelerating the decline of the American empire, bankrupting the nation at a time of economic stagnation and mounting poverty, and turning huge parts of the globe against us. They serve Israel’s interests, not ours.
The longer the mendacious Israeli narrative is embraced, the more empowered become the racists, bigots, conspiracy theorists and far-right hate groups inside and outside Israel. This steady shift to the far right in Israel has fostered an alliance between Israel and the Christian right, many of whom are anti-Semites. The more Israel and the Israel lobby level the charge of anti-Semitism against those who speak up for Palestinian rights, as they did against British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, the more they embolden the real anti-Semites.
Racism, including anti-Semitism, is dangerous. It is not only bad for the Jews. It is bad for everyone. It empowers the dark forces of ethnic and religious hatred on the extremes. Netanyahu’s racist government has built alliances with far-right leaders in Hungary, India, and Brazil, and was closely allied with Donald Trump. Racists and ethnic chauvinists, as I saw in the wars in the former Yugoslavia, feed off of each other. They divide societies into polarized, antagonistic camps that only speak in the language of violence. The radical jihadists need Israel to justify their violence, just as Israel needs the radical jihadists to justify its violence. These extremists are ideological twins.
This polarization fosters a fearful, militarized society. It permits the ruling elites in Israel, as in the United States, to dismantle civil liberties in the name of national security. Israel runs training programs for militarized police, including from the United States. It is a global player in the multibillion-dollar drone industry, competing against China and the United States.
It oversees hundreds of cybersurveillance startups whose espionage innovations, according to the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, have been utilized abroad “to locate and detain human rights activists, persecute members of the LGBT community, silence citizens critical of their governments, and even fabricate cases of blasphemy against Islam in Muslim countries that don’t maintain formal relations with Israel.”
Israel, like the United States, has been poisoned by the psychosis of permanent war. One million Israelis, many of them among the most enlightened and educated, have left the country. Its most courageous human rights campaigners, intellectuals and journalists—Israeli and Palestinian—endure constant government surveillance, arbitrary arrests and vicious government-run smear campaigns. Mobs and vigilantes, including thugs from right-wing youth groups such as Im Tirtzu, physically assault dissidents, Palestinians, Israeli Arabs and African immigrants in the slums of Tel Aviv. These Jewish extremists have targeted Palestinians in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, demanding their expulsion. They are supported by an array of anti-Arab groups including the Otzma Yehudit Party, the ideological descendant of the outlawed Kach party, the Lehava movement, which calls for all Palestinians in Israel and the occupied territories to be expelled to surrounding Arab states, and La Familia, far-right soccer hooligans. Lehava in Hebrew means “flame” and is the acronym for “Prevention of Assimilation in the Holy Land.” Mobs of these Jewish fanatics parade through Palestinian neighborhoods, including in occupied East Jerusalem, protected by Israeli police, shouting to the Palestinians who live there “Death to the Arabs,” which is also a popular chant at Israeli soccer matches.
Israel has pushed through a series of discriminatory laws against non-Jews that echo the racist Nuremberg Laws that disenfranchised Jews in Nazi Germany. The Communities Acceptance Law, for example, permits “small, exclusively Jewish towns planted across Israel’s Galilee region to formally reject applicants for residency on the grounds of ‘suitability to the community’s fundamental outlook.” Israel’s educational system, starting in primary school, uses the Holocaust to portray Jews as eternal victims. This victimhood is an indoctrination machine used to justify racism, Islamophobia, religious chauvinism and the deification of the Israeli military.
There are many parallels between the deformities that grip Israel and the deformities that grip the United States. The two countries are moving at warp speed towards a 21rst century fascism, cloaked in religious language, which will revoke what remains of our civil liberties and snuff out our anemic democracies. The failure of the United States to stand up for the rule of law, to demand that the Palestinians, powerless and friendless, even in the Arab world, be granted basic human rights mirrors the abandonment of the vulnerable within our own society. We are headed, I fear, down the road Israel is heading down. It will be devastating for the Palestinians. It will be devastating for us. And all resistance, as the Palestinians courageously show us, will only come from the street.

love , empathy, and rational thought have all been blinded by Faith as usual. The faith and belief and the repetition of belief day after day, year after year. The core belief is that the israelites are a lineage of people , a discreet family of people that all descended from Abraham and Jacob . This lineage was spoken to by a supreme being/creator through the Torah which was given to Moses. They made a covenant with this supreme being to return to Canaan, the promised land, and to inhabit it and rebuild the temple for the return of the messiah. That is the core purpose that underlies the conflict. The lineage of zionists are driven by a purpose that has intoxicated them , it empowers, them – they believe they literally are on a mission from God. The conflict can only be understood by gentiles if a supreme power instructs them on this covenant and commands them to let it come to fruition – that will not happen, and so the lineage of the israelites will always be at war against those that are not a part of their covenant. This is a manifestation of the fundamental violence inherent in the concept of inclusion vs exclusion – these are the real two states, inclusion and exclusion and it this two state concept that applies to nearly all socioeconomic inequality that is causing a very large part of global suffering on many levels throughout history
Most Zionists were (and are) atheists and the last thing they care about is rebuilding the Third temple or waiting for the Messiah.
Ultra religious Jews are anti-Zionists.
Shlomo Sand, an Israeli Emeritus Professor of History at Tel Aviv University, masterly examines the Zionist myth building efforts to justify forming a Jewish homeland from late in the 19th century. He also describes how successful the Jewish religious leaders were at proselyting during 200 BCE through 400 CE, in the lands surrounding the Mediterranean. And then in 600 CE, the royal family of Khazaria converted to Judaism, and subsequently its people who later spread around northeastern Europe and became the Ashkenazi’s who several centuries later spearheaded the Zionist movement. Not too much Abrahamic blood left by then. On the other hand he speculates with good insight, that the Jewish peasants who remained in Judea probably became Muslims when Saladin & co invaded to drive out the European Crusaders. Saladin did not want them to leave their farming but said anyone not a Muslim had to pay tax. They, the west bank Palestinians, he suggests are like the remnant of the Abrahamic bloodline.
You should learn the history of Israel. Founded as a socialist state. Read the words of Ben-Gurion himself. Do you know what a kibbutz is?
As to your thesis contending religion is to blame it rests on a claim which commits the fallacy of reification. You confer attributes exclusive to living entities to abstract concepts. Religious concepts, like economic ones (think corporations or capitalism) cannot “do” anything. They are not biological organisms. Human beings create the justification for their actions and behaviours. Eliminating religious ideas from societies will do nothing to eradicate violence or any other harmful behaviour. It will more likely increase it as it creates conditions which allow for many other rationalizations to be acceptable which previously would not have been.
This piece reminds me of Benjamin Madley’s “American Genocide: The United States and the California Indian Catastrophe, 1846-1873” (Bob interviewed the author when the book came out, too). Like the Palestinians, the Indians provided all the propagandistic ammunition needed for the goverment to increase its ethnic cleansing by refusing to be killed, defending themselves, and, when relocated away from their food sources, stealing food. The cycle is the same. The colonizers hire an army to colonize; the army kill or relocate the indigenous then feed the press stories about the indigenous fighting back, resisting, or stealing; the press uncritically amplify the story; this scares the settlers to take up arms (provided by the army) and join the army (which also happens to pay well); repeat ad infinitum until land resources acquired and the indigenous are neutralized. Tangentially, I lost six extended family members to Covid-19; they all lived on the CA rez. It’s still going on.
“scares the settlers to take up arms….” . This was the real reason for the 2nd amendment. Supply the settlers with cheap guns to control and or kill slaves. Mexicans and Native Americans.
Thank you Chris! you are indeed a media personality that managed to stay lucid and awake. When I hear truth spoken I feel a pleasure in my mind greater than music can provide. We live in the age of deceit and the times of the Locusts, namely Capitalism which I call Cannibalism. We know where this will end and I am not afraid. Rather I am glad that the insanity and the hypocrisy does have an end. Many have closed their minds for the sake of personal gain or cowardice and have no way to return to sanity. Jesus called them “the dead”. That is alright with me. Meantime, we educate the poor of this earth and show them the way the Great Spirit, the Father of all Creation has designed for us. We do it through art, you do it through words. A kiss of peace to you, Claudio Amadeus.
A beautiful comment Claudio!
Kevin, you are on to something in your mention of COVID-19, and the “California
Indian Catastrophe”. I was raised in the area now called Western Pennsylvania originally Erie and Ojibwa land where Jeffrey Amherst later Lord Jeffrey Amherst when he was knighted for his work as the British commander in the French and Indians War authorized the distribution of small pox blankets to the indigenous people. I suspect this is why the Zionists will keep pounding Gaza, to make it a ripe incubator for COVID-19.
Sorry for your loss. We lost a brother.
America hasn’t stepped up to adhere to international law right here on this continent, with respect to the indigenous populations, complete violations of treaties, which are international accords based in international law. The USA Constitution, Article 6, calls them supreme laws of the land. Yeah, welcome to the reservation. This seems to be what the American Population wants.
The long screed, dare I say “demonizing” Israel, oddly ignores at least one important question. Who’s getting the $38 billion package? Are the religious nuts fighting over pieces of the pie in Israel/Palestine seeing a penny of the $38 billion, or is most or all of it going to US military contractors and their lobbyists? Is the “Israel lobby” working for “thugs from right-wing youth groups” and “an array of anti-Arab groups” or is it a subset of the US military?
How does the $38 billion aid Israel in securing peace and security? One would think the renowned journalist, Mr. Hedges, would be a little more diligent in following the money, and a little less reckless with words, when he repeatedly talks of a $38 billion “defense aid” package for Israel.
Sheldon Gitis,
Are you even aware that U.S. taxpayers have been billed $309.4 BILLION for aid to Israel thus far?
https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/total-u-s-foreign-aid-to-israel-1949-present
Bradley Grower,
So what? Obviously, it’s the the “little people” taxpayers who fund the military-industrial complex. My point wasn’t about who’s paying. If you’re following the money, you want to know who’s getting paid.
You’re seriously asking how $38 billion from the U.S. aids Israel’s military? The shipment of American weapons to Israel is well-documented — jets, bombs, missiles, artillery, tanks, boats, guns, etc. Maybe try informing yourself before displaying such raw ignorance.
Most of that [detracted US Taxpayer money] “aid” will be used by Israel to do weapon buybacks from the US and other countries.
So essentially, due to business interest and corruption of the highest order, the American Taxpayer finances American weapon manufacturers by paying for Israel’s [but not only] American made arms.
Capisci?
Good point.
The USA with its support for Israel’s ongoing war crimes is beyond redemption. And that is nothing compared to the USA’s ongoing war crimes around the world. What the USA does around the world it does to its own citizens as well. I give the USA two more years at best before everything truly begins to implode for the citizens. And if you are a person of color in the USA it has been imploding for centuries. The USA is a complete monster that kills and destroys everything around. And if I whenever I hear that same old lie about how Israel has a right to “defend” itself I literally scream at the top of my lungs. The USA along with Israel is leading the charge to kill and destroy all life on earth. Their simply are no words for the anger and heartbreak I feel as I watch these so called civilized societies act like the sociopathic serial killers that they truly are.
I apologize for my atrocious proofreading before posting. That is what happens when I write too quickly and with anger.
The entire world is falling into a fascist darkness Cat. I feel and share your anger and frustration. Be prepared because it’s going to get much much worse.
Brother Chris, you are a modern Jeremiah! Thank you, for your willingness to pay the price for speaking truth to power! While many Americans and Canadians for that matter drink the cool aid of Israel as the good guy in the Middle East, Israeli apartheid is now on full display for the world to see and Biden, Trudeau, Merkul are all making their stand very clear, they stand with the oppressor, the settler/colonists, the racist bigots, and on the side of war, death, and destruction. The deadly platitudes of calling for peace and a return to the status quo no longer hold water Israel sows the seeds of its own destruction by its willful violence against a defenceless population. Jews of conscience all around the world are denouncing the latest round of violence. No justice, no peace!
Chris Hedges mentions but not emphasizes the way American Empire has removed Israel’s Middle Eastern rivals. Iraq has been tamed, Libya destroyed, Syria weakened, Egypt co-opted, the Gulf States and Arabia allied. All this done without Israel firing one American-made bullet or rocket. Iran is the “last man standing”.
very perceptive…..
thanks for sharing
Libya and Syria have been torn apart by their people revolting against tyrannical despots (Assad and Gaddafi) which did not hesitate to kill tens of thousands of their own citizens.
Do you see peace between Israel and other Arab states as Egypt, Jordan, UAE, Morocco as a bad thing?
If you had not drunk so much ‘regime change’ Kool-Aid propaganda, you would know that both Assad and Gaddafi enjoy and enjoyed considerable popular support and that their opponents were given the full support of the Salafist Wahabists of Saudi Arabia et al, as well as the American neocons, especially the CIA. I do not equate Al Qaeda with popular revolt; however, US media and government, as well as NATO and other Western powers sling a narrative that continues to ‘manufacture consent’ for the destruction of their rivals.
As far as “peace between Israel”, for the most part this is simply bribery by the Americans of a despotic elite and does not reflect the will of the people of those countries.
Absolutely. And as Hedges points out, there is this fatal irony:
“Israel has pushed through a series of discriminatory laws against non-Jews that echo the racist Nuremberg Laws that disenfranchised Jews in Nazi Germany.”
Crucially, Israel is less “Jewish” than an apartheid state monopolized by Israeli Jews. That is, Netanyahu could not care less what happens to international Jewry (what’s left of it) so long as Israel and his own hubristic intentions are gratified.
There are no laws preventing non Jews practicing medicine or the law or marrying Jews so I should say that the comparison is not really based on fact
There is a big difference between being “married” and having the LEGAL RIGHTS of a married couple:
https://www.haaretz.com/middle-east-news/palestinians/for-an-israeli-married-to-a-palestinian-family-unification-is-forbidden-1.8886935
And our fear of offending the sensibilities of the oppressors is our complicity.
Fear of recriminations more than fear of complicity, I’d say.
screw you, Chris! if there wasn’t an asymmetrical military advantage for Israel, the Arabs would’ve destroyed it and its people decades ago…I don’t support the continued expansion into the West Back by settlers but when missile attacks come, theres gonna be retaliation!
Obviously, from your comments you’ve never understood the backstory. You might want to read this single page piece of written by a Jewish doctor who used to work at the Harvard Medical School:
https://www.counterpunch.org/2021/05/14/the-nakba-continues/
The Israelis are not murdering anyone. The Palestinians are committing suicide in hopes of grabbing sympathy, aid and support from all the bleeding heart liberals of the world. Who started firing missles at whom I must ask? The Arab states have proved they can be defeated and will be allowed by Israel to continue to exist. Israel does not enjoy that luxury. One defeat and that’s all for Israel and all the Jews residing there. The “Final Solution” has been tried before and the Israelis have sworn “Never Again!”
Right on, Chuck! Hedges conveniently ignores the hundreds of millions Hamas has diverted from aid to buy Iranian missiles rather than helping the Palestinians build up Gaza. Hamas and Iran have made it their mission to destroy Israel and will sacrifice as many Palestinians as needed. The only Big Lie is Hedges’.
As usual, another misguided journalist who hides behind his “years of experience”.
It is a ‘war crime’ when Hamas hids amongst civilians and fires thousands of rocks at civilian targets, not military, in Israel!!
Paul Berlin,
Chris Hedges condemned Hamas rocket attacks as a war crime. I guess you didn’t get to paragraph #4.
I find the power dynamics between Israel and the US quite fascinating. Has there ever been a time in history that such a small and economically insignificant country has ever dominated the foreign politics of such a large and powerful superpower like the US? I think not.
The explanation for this is largely hidden in a cloud of smoke and mirrors and if the truth where known, I believe we would find a vast network of corruption, bribery, fraud, and compulsion. Be careful if you try to find out, because you tread down that path only at your peril.
Both countries validate the very worst impulses of the other, and I am sure I am not alone in thinking that ultimately this marriage made in hell will blossom into something much much worse….
Mr Hedges, how would you respond to another entity firing over 2000 rockets into your country that has called for your country’s annihilation?
My Name is Caleb,
Pretty certain Chris Hedges would call that a war crime… just like he did in paragraph #4 of this piece.
Maybe, I would ask myself, why this happens all the time. I would try, if treating them like human beings works.
I wanted to reply to this comment because I see many defenders of Israeli policy respond like this to criticism: they will accuse Arab factions of atrocities and justify the need to defend themselves, while not discussing their own complicity. Chris and many others have documented how Israel has committed human rights abuses against the Palestinians. You can argue about the details, the degree of harm, but essentially we are looking at a kind of blood feud or tribal warfare being waged by both sides.
Israel is like a human crushing an ant: the military and intelligence (Mossad) advantage Israel has over the Palestinians is exponential. Just to be a devil’s advocate, let’s say that the Israeli Military and Mossad, being highly advanced and proactive, will be able to outmaneuver any adversary, as they have done for the last 70 years. Israel is still moving towards a militarized police state, like the US, and anyone of decency and conscience will not want to live under that. Nuclear warfare and terrorism will be an increased threat, as Israeli policy will continue to generate enemies: Mossad will try to manage those threats, but there’s no guarantee. It’s hard for me to accept, but without a major intervention I do not foresee, Israeli leadership is smart enough, organized enough, to dominate the region for another 70 years: not anyplace I’d want to live, but many Israelis seem okay with this if Chris’s article is any indication.
Differently than Israel, which seems to view the indiscriminate killing of civilians as an appropriate response. I also wouldn’t feel too high and mighty about the sanctity of defending “my own country” if it was created through ethnic cleansing and maintained through apartheid.
related to this latest slaughter is the US backed $5.4 billion EastMed pipeline, transporting Israeli gas to the EU – the gas belongs to Palestine but why bother with legalities.

Thanks for this link to Norman Finkelstein – 6-minutes of undiluted truth from the man who is described by some in the MSM as a self-hating Jew – what he really is is a Truth Telling Jew that Zionist’s hate. Norman hits the nail on the head in this short video.
My faith in American media has been utterly suffocated this week. Not merely because fake news has morphed into the normalized state propaganda regurgitated by the largest corporate outlets in our nation, but because the small handful of intelligent voices who know the actual facts and historical context regarding current events in Israel, are no longer welcome anywhere… not even on PBS or NPR.
Mr. Hedges has earned his credibility, although naysayers continue to criticize his strident tone and harsh denunciations. Perhaps if these voices were willing to do the research, and apply critical thought in the reasoning process, rather than rely on others to do so for them, they might finally be able to comprehend the level of ignorance that such replies exhibit.
I am aghast that a nation so recently awash in jingoist slogans of liberty and freedom, would blindly accept the open theft of homes, the shooting of religious penitents at prayer in their church, the destruction of entire apartment buildings housing hundreds, the killing of dozens of children, and the verbalized threat of continued use of American munitions to murder and maim… in the name of Israel.
Superb assessment.
Who are NPR and PBS and what do they stand for ?
These abbreviations represent the state-owned radio and television media in the U.S.
NPR- National Public Radio
PBS- Public Broadcasting System (television)
After the Israeli government intentionally targeted and destroyed the offices of the AP, Al Jazeera, and other news agencies in Gaza, both of these broadcast systems began to allow a variety of viewpoints into their coverage, including details of the apartheid system that seeks to expel Palestinians from their own occupied land. Better late than never.
This has been happening for 3 decades, now you’re aghast? The US will always support Israel because it is just common sense geopolitically, the West only is concerned with the optics of freedom and democracy not the reality of it.
Now that an Israeli military spokesman has announced “it is not feasible” to warn unarmed noncombatants in advance of blowing up their homes and businesses, it would appear Netanyahu has determined international law no longer applies to Israel. But, did it ever?
As of today, those reporting the ongoing crimes against humanity being committed in Gaza have been included in the list of targets to be destroyed. The 12 story building which housed the AP, Al Jazeera, and other news organizations has been razed by a military airstrike. Will it even make the evening news?
The fact that these brave Journalists were given advance warning by the Israeli military should be evidence of the absolute contempt for innocent civilian life being exercised in brutal atrocities which continue to mangle the bodies of unarmed women and children. When will Token Joe finally speak up?
Is is disingenuous to describe the Palestinians as indigenous, because they are not.
The Jews have returned to the land from which they were expelled, by Titus and his Roman Army.
Wherever the Palestians came from, it is not the land of Judea!
Trevor McKenzie
Obviously, you don’t even knowing the definition of the multi-syllable terms that you choose to use.
This definition brought to you by Merriam-Webster:
Indigenous or less commonly indigenous : of or relating to the earliest known inhabitants of a place and especially of a place that was colonized by a now-dominant group // Indigenous peoples
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/indigenous
BTW- You’re welcome!
Trevor, the Palestinians have always lived exactly where they live now. Not all people of Biblical times were Hebrews, and not all Hebrews were expelled by the Romans. In terms of ancient ethnicity, the Palestinians are more akin to the Biblical Hebrews than the European and Sephardic Jews who left Palestine or were expelled from Palestine many centuries ago. Scholarship has shown that a kind of Jewish diaspora happened long before Rome. So, you cannot ask where the Palestinians came from because they never left Palestine.
Should the descendents of our natives turn up and demand the return of the lands we stole, I’m sure you’d be the first to defend them!
Why stop at Titus and the Romans? Why not go back to Pharaoh and the Egyptians? Or back to the Great Rift Valley, where *everyone* apparently came from? If your justification is that Yahweh gave Israel to the Jews, sorry, but I’m going to need to hear that from him first-hand — with around seven billion other people as witnesses. Don’t feel singled out, though. I require the same evidence for every other claim of divine justification.
May I recommend two books by
Shlomo Sand (Israeli Emeritus Professor of History at Tel Aviv University):
The Invention of the Jewish People; and,
The Invention of the Land of Israel.
With regards
To the author, how convenient it is that you can choose your truth, considering you live on land your squattering ancestors stole as you forced mine to walk a trail of tears. Right your own world before defiling another.
Cici
Why should unjustified state violence that is happening in the present EVER be overlooked?
Could you please describe your tribal heritage? Not capitalizing “Trail of Tears” is very problematic.
@Cici:
“[H]ow convenient it is that you can choose your truth, considering you live on land your [squatting] ancestors stole as you forced mine to walk a trail of tears.”
I think Chris would be the first to concede this, even if his own ancestors arrived well after the land was stolen.
“Right your own world before *righting* another.”
Fixed that for you.
I am thankful for Chris to raise his voice against the oppression and expose those who are supporting it. The US particularly this new president Mr. Biden who pretend to be defender of oppressed in the world and promote peace is nakedly exposed. Those who are believers know that God will not tolerate oppression.
I am thankful for Mr Hedges for sharing his personal experiences as are foreign (“war”) correspondent.
And yes Biden, like the other presidents all seem to fall in line and take direction and order from the corporate/military state.
However, “God will not tolerate oppression” ? Given the history of humanity up to the present, I would say that is false, isn’t it?
Very informative article. I do think there was a typo in the 38 billion dollars given to Israel; it’s actually 3.8 billion per year given. Way too much money for Israel to be killing kids. That is not and never has been acceptable anywhere, ever. #FreePalestine
The article says $38 billion over the next decade…
Actually, the total paid by U.S. taxpayers in aid to Israel since 1949 is a whopping $309.4 BILLION!
thanx to Chris Hedges for his courageous truth telling!
The core problem is extreme tribalism, combined with economic corruption of democracy:
1. Tribe members have economic and social dependencies causing fear of criticizing leaders;
2. They are taught that tribe members are virtuous, and wrongs come from beyond the tribe;
3. Tribal tyrants to create foreign monsters to pose as defenders & accuse others of disloyalty;
4. Economic corruption has allowed rich tyrants to dominate in the disguise of democracy;
These core problems are unmentioned in the terminal pseudo-democracies of the West.
Yet another great article by Chris Hedges. Thank You!!!
Larry Johnson
Chris Hedges mostly tells it like it is, a horror supported by the US and perpetrated by Israel on the Palestinians. The one sour note in his piece is about Yugoslavia, which the US and it’s NATO allies disintegrated, portraying Serbia as villainous, especially in Sarajevo. Diana Johnstone tells a different story. Hedges always comes back to his story, as if he knows it is not acceptable, and biased.
This article is the big lie. It’s a distorted and one sided depiction of reality, a fairytale where there is a bad guy, a good guy and an evil step-dad.
It evokes emotions to cloud judgment and most importantly it blatantly ignores the nature of the conflict and the Palestinian leadership’s crimes and mistakes which led to the poor fate of its people.
Blaming everything on Israel and depicting it as evil is very convenient for the haters but it’s not very productive.
This type of articles will not bring relief to the Palestinians nor will they promote peace. They will only bring hate.
And when Americans continue to say nothing, as American weapons purchased with American taxpayer dollars are used by the Israeli Government to kill unarmed men, women, and children… not only are they complicit, but accessories before… and AFTER the fact.
To deny that a rabid government-led effort to disenfranchise and expel Palestinians from their own land has been ongoing for more than a decade, is to admit absolute ignorance of the illegality of “settlements” and the violations of Geneva Conventions which REQUIRE that the occupier protect the property and well-being of those within occupied territories.
There is no fairy tale. Period.
But there are facts… and those facts prove that this “conflict” is nothing but a one-sided turkey-shoot!
I heartily agree with your assessment of US complicity. However, the frame of weapons “purchased with American taxpayer dollars” is not correct. The US government funded those weapons using Congressional authority. Taxpayers had nothing to do with that decision. What happens in this kind of transaction is that domestic resources that could have been used for domestic purposes, are transferred to this foreign entity called Israel. In other words, Israelis become slightly richer (although weapons have only a notional value) because they do not have to expend resources for killing Palestinians. As a corollary, Americans become slightly poorer as we have less resources for killing our enemies.
Ted Tripp,
Exactly where do you think the tax revenues originate, with which the U.S. Congress continues to finances tens of billions of dollars in weapons and weapons systems for the Israeli Government?
Any attempt to shift the question of ownership of Israeli atrocities, from the bloody hands of complicit American citizens to AIPAC financed congressional representatives, would appear to be somewhat disingenuous. Until the apartheid regime is removed, ALL aid is blood money, especially in a nation where the average household income is more than $58,250 pre-tax! (By way of comparison, the average household income in Gaza for 2017, was a paltry $9,400 for a family of six.)
According to a bio in the U.S. House of Representatives archive, Rep. Cynthia McKinney sponsored legislation “to curb weapons sales to countries that violated human rights” in 1997. When Rep. McKinney suggested withholding aid from Israel for human rights violations, her primary challenger in the subsequent election received twice the amount of McKinney’s campaign donations, and the six term representative ended up losing that Democratic Party primary with the assistance of registered Republican voters in GA. This was not an object lesson that went unnoticed by any sitting federal elected official… and one that is STILL remembered to this day.
Furthermore, utilizing a derivatives-related term in order to downplay the MASSIVE $309.4 BILLION in U.S. aid that has been handed to the Israel Government since 1949, seems a bit of a misnomer, unless you consider aid to Israel to be some kind of investment opportunity. At this point, I haven’t been able to locate an inflation-adjusted total for this aid… but I would ball-park it at well over 3/4 of TRILLION mark, and counting.
I’m not certain where your obsession with “killing” originates. Israeli atrocities in violation of the Geneva Conventions should not be financed by American taxpayers… and U.S. atrocities in a combat zone sans a constitutionally-mandated Declaration of War- ARE JUST AS ILLEGAL.
Former-Representative Cynthia McKinney has long been exposing the human rights violations by the Israeli government that are slowly being exposed by the fringes of American mainstream media.
And for those efforts, she was smeared by the ADL.

If the tables were turned Hamas would exterminate every Jew they could, every last one. This does not excuse the illegal settlements, or the killing of children, but we are talking about a large percentage of a religion that equates to 1.4 billion people, who believe Sharia law is acceptable along with genital mutilation, women being regarded as luggage and a host of primordial beliefs that belong in the dark ages. Yes extremist of all religions are a threat, but scale matters. The peaceful, loving, intellectual Muslims, which there are hundreds of millions unfortunately are not represented in middle east leadership.
Yes Benjamin Netanyahu is a war mongering, right wing sycophant, and yes Israel is by no means innocent, and I agree that we need to actually put pressure on the Israeli leadership to stop the illegal settlements, and put an end to this as fast as possible. I absolutely appreciate great writers like CH that have risked their lives to help shed a light to real human suffering around the world.
I am only allowing this post because it is a quality example of the kind of mindless Islamophobia that the usually is identified with the far-right or just the intense ignorance of people who have never known actual Muslims much less traveled to Muslim (or Shia) countries.
I am presuming, perhaps incorrectly, that Jack here considers themself an enlightened leftist…and yet promulgates such nonsense about a “large percentage” of 1.4 billion people that believe genital mutilation is acceptable, or that Islam has a unique hold on misogyny and patriarchy.
There are reactionaries, fundamentalists and extremists, not to mention people still living in the rural, dire poverty associated with the middle ages of every major religion/creed/culture who have beliefs antithetical the those of the modern progressive.
Myself, I live in a “Christian” country where it is considered OK to:
— Beat or shoot people who don’t comply with a police officer’s demand to never feel fear.
— Let people starve and sleep in the streets if they have a mental illness, disability or otherwise that makes them both ineffective workers and difficult to deal with personally.
— Let parents abuse their children and men abuse their partners as if “they were luggage” as long as they don’t go “too far, too often” and the victim is brainwashed to think they need it.
— The quality of one’s education, healthcare and housing is based on one’s ability to match their abilities, training, sex/age/gender/race/charisma level, and life choices to the obscure, always-changing needs of “winner-take-most” economic system.
— To have the highest rate of incarceration in the world, even higher than overtly totalitarian societies.
— To have permanent underclasses based on race/region/family history where only a token few are lucky enough ever escape in each generation to the “middle class”
— Insanely high rates of rape (because of reporting issues, one can never be too confident about numbers, but the UN and other sources have the US and UK as the highest among developed nations).
— a gun culture, a culture of militarism, jingoism and blurring the lines between religion and patriotism, a history of genocide, slavery and intolerance…
Nobody needs to celebrate Hamas or the Iranian theocrats to point out how utterly inane your comments are, and equating them with Hitler is just pure provocation.
There is a lot of whataboutism on this issue, but the key is: If you are an American, you should be must concerned about who we support, financially and militarily, not those we don’t — that’s where your moral responsibility lies. In that sense, if you want to attack anybody, better to criticize the Saudis, who could probably lift the Palestinians out of poverty in a few decades if, a) they cared to do so; and b) the US and Israel would allow it, and/or help.
Dear Moderator
OK, you convinced me. Christianity is also bad.
Long Life Atheism!
“better to criticize the Saudis, who could probably lift the Palestinians out of poverty in a few decades if, a) they cared to do so; and b) the US and Israel would allow it, and/or help.” That was the essence of the ( misguided) Trump peace plan which has been thoroughly rejected by the Palestinian so called leadership. The question is not if the US and Israel will allow it but if Hamas will, as they have a long tradition of physically removing any internal opposition or dissent.
Of course the US is involved. We have to be. War is the last prop holding up the dollar. We can never stop or the house of cards tumbles.
(Spoiler alert – it’s gong to tumble regardless.)
Israel’s actions today, in 2021, toward Arab Palestinians, going back for at least the last 53-plus years is identical to the attitude of those who claimed, and still do, that the Holocaust never happened.
What this behavior proves is that the duplicitous nature of inhumanity is a universal trait in man; practiced by those who have wielded the power throughout history!
It also proves that natural evolution has nothing, necessarily, to do with progressive civilization.
What the world is yet again witnessing is unconstrained insanity, yet its reaction is no more perturbed than it ever was.
“Israel has pushed through a series of discriminatory laws against non-Jews that echo the racist Nuremberg Laws that disenfranchised Jews in Nazi Germany.”
What should be included in that statement is Israel’s implementation of the Green Pass, which discriminates against anyone who declines vaccination for Covid-19, which threatens to further fracture that society:
https://www.israeltoday.co.il/read/the-green-passport-could-poison-israeli-society/
Holocaust survivor Vera Sherav has followed Israel’s developments and has warnings for the US, where such passports–a Big Tech tool for medical apartheid–are already be rolled out:

Thank you, Chris, for speaking the truth about Israel.
Chris, You might add an additional fact the next time you talk about how much the USG subsidizes the immoral atrocities Israel is committing. Haaretz reported in 2019 that Israel is home to 128 $billionaires versus a little over 600 $billionaires in the US. Using a little math, Israel has 10 times the number of billionaires as the US on a per capita basis. So, why does Israel need our financial assistance to commit immoral war crimes? Since we give them the F16s, the thousand pound bombs and $3 billion in cash to pay for the pilots and maintenance technicians then we are just as guilty as they are for committing the war crimes. Rabbi Henry Siegman made that point very clear during an interview on Democracy Now during the 2014 atrocities.
I’m an admirer and follower of Hedges work, especially about illegal Israel and occupied Palestine.
However, his comments re the U.S./ NATO invasion and takeover of Yugoslavia are troubling, to say the least. Particularly: “…well over 90 percent of the killings in Bosnia were the fault of the Serbs….” “…the Serbs, like the Israelis, were the principal violators of international law.” He was there, I wasn’t. Not to draw any parallels whatsoever, but having served in the M.E. with the UN, I saw, and know how easy it is to be swayed by preconceived ideas.
Because of my interest in propaganda and the “official,” “state” version of Yugoslavia’s destruction, I read each of the following:
NATO in the BALKANS: VOICES OF OPPOSITION. Ramsey Clark, Sean Gervasi, Sara Flounders, Thomas Deichmann, Nadja Tesich.
TO KILL A NATION: THE ATTACK ON YUGOSLAVIA, by Michael Parenti
HIDDEN AGENDA: U.S./NATO TAKEOVER OF YUGOSLAVIA, chapters by Pres. Slobodan Milosevic, Ramsey Clark, etc. by Pres. Slobodan Milosevic, Ramsey Clark, etc.
FOOLS’ CRUSADE: Yugoslavia, NATO and Western Delusions, by DIANA JOHNSTONE
And of course, Global Research:
https://www.globalresearch.ca/search?q=Yugoslavia&x=0&y=0
T’would be interesting to know if Chris has read any of them, and how he rationalizes the disparity.
This is my second attempt!

Chris Hedges, at a time of such pain and sadness, your words and courage helps a great deal. I have been living in lies the 56 years that I have lived in US. I have been waiting for a voice that spoke the truth. Thank you.
Chomsky stated that Israel had the choice between expansion and security. They could not have both. What they have chosen is self destruction.
Chomsky may be wrong.
I assume he is only human
Dear Mr. Hedges
In your opinion what is the appropriate response to “the indiscriminate firing of rockets by Palestinians into Israel”?
What would you do to prevent Hamas from further such “crimes of war”( your definition)?
Perhaps you should launch a BDS movement against them and their sponsors (Iran, Turkey, etc).
A war crime is a war crime by any other name and all war criminals should be treated equally. Isn’t that so?
The Iraqis were firing rockets into the Green Zone in May 2008 from the densely populated Sadir City area of Baghdad. The ambassadors and general officers wanted Petraeus to bomb all of Sadir City. Petraeus refused, saying that would be a war crime. He sent in the infantry to do the difficult work of clearing the area. He won over the hearts of the Iraqis and did not commit the war at crimes being committed by the Israelis today.
General Petraeus had the blood and treasure of the USA to utilize in his endeavors. His actions were more or less expected of the US army. Israel is no where near so blessed or wealthy. If the US fails in its foreign interventions its just back to the drawing board and try to figure out a way to explain the whole thing to the Congress and the media. If Israel looses a single time to its Arab opponents then its all over. The Palestinians refuse to negotiate in good faith with Israel because they demand nothing less than the elimination of Israel for ever.
So sending tanks is OK but aircraft is no-no?
J.A. Gaither,
Then what did the Israeli Government do with the $309.4 BILLION the U.S. has given them to date?
alteyid48,
Obviously you are confused… once again.
U.S. infantry units do not operate tanks. That’s the job of the U.S. cavalry.
Dear Bradley
I may be wrong but I am never confused (yet).
In this case I was just misunderstood : my comment was related to the Gaza conflict and addressed the use of ground forces as opposed to air force assets.
alteyid48,
You remain both incorrect AND confused.
Gary originally stated:
“The Iraqis were firing rockets into the Green Zone in May 2008 from the densely populated Sadir City area of Baghdad. The ambassadors and general officers wanted Petraeus to bomb all of Sadir City. Petraeus refused, saying that would be a war crime. He sent in the infantry to do the difficult work of clearing the area. He won over the hearts of the Iraqis and did not commit the war at crimes being committed by the Israelis today.”
alteyid48 responded:
“So sending tanks is OK but aircraft is no-no?”
Gary’s reference clearly explains that U.S. infantry were used to quell Sadir City violence in Iraq. Your subsequent response was based on an ignorant assumption that the U.S. infantry operates tanks. Now, to avoid admitting your ignorance, you have the nerve to claim that somehow Gary suggested the use of heavy tanks against unarmed civilians within an urban environment. Have you no shame?
Chris, not once have I heard back from you, and time is running out. Have you any interest t all? I cannot wait any longer, and so I am beginning to share this information with someone else — very capable and filled with energy, who I have every reason will jump on it, but maybe not. Who knows. . .

The U.S. State Department was contacted in 2017 by researchers at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, in an attempt to obtain U.S. emergency funding to improve training and safety protocols. Diplomats from the Beijing Embassy were given a tour of the facility by staff, and Secretary of State Pompeo’s office was wired a diplomatic cable regarding the extreme danger posed by the Chinese Government’s suspension of funding. NO ACTION WAS TAKEN AT THAT TIME BY TRUMP OR POMPEO.
The entire “Chinese Flu” hysteria may in fact be an enormous cover-up, designed to conceal the fact that the two most powerful nations on the planet FAILED to finance necessary precautions to keep the virus isolated. China’s budget cuts, and the Trump administration’s refusal to provide funding even though the lab was working with the U.S. National Institutes of Health, may have contributed to conditions in which this lethal virus escaped into the general population by means of a security protocol violation.

As I approach the grave, my view of the future of human prospects becomes ever more
dismal. Palestine is one aspect of this.
As I inspect the course of Zionism since 1898, I see only one aspect by which it differs
from the antics of Adolf: The Final Solution. All else has been done – especially lebensraum,
ghettoism, and the destruction of livelihood.
Up until now, the FS has been impeded by the fact that it will be noticed. In my opinion, this
inconvenience was tested favorably in 2018 when hundreds of peaceful demonstrators were
mowed down by members of the Israeli Death Force (IDF). Nothing happened.
If Zionists decide to kill all Palestinians in their purview, or drive them over the border into
states that do not want them, or a combination of the above, I believe that they will get away
with it.
All evidence points to this. Sorry.
A friend of mine used to ask, “Where are the Palestinian Ghandis?” My answer: “Dead.”
Trump litigation: not much new here except:
James’ office gave no reason for expanding the investigation into the Trump Organization but we know it’s purely political.
This added bit of info may be of interest to you:
It was recently reported that law enforcement officials in Palm Beach County, Florida are preparing for the real possibility that crooked Manhattan DA Cy Vance may indict Trump while he’s at Mar-a-Lago.
Two officials told Politico Playbook that there could be “thorny extradition issues” because Governor DeSantis, a staunch Trump ally, has the power to intervene.

There also have been four major earthquakes huge in the last days:
And yesterday, Dutchsinse, who truly understands earthquakes had this info on his blog, which I link here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bqr8A1w1V0M
Back in 2012, when our FEAR was also great, as we were going to connect directly with the Sun at that time, he acquainted us with the huge problems present by the New Madrid Fault Line (on which he lives in St. Louis): If the earth becomes disturbed (she is a living being; even science now says this) and this Fault Line collapses, Lake Superior will ‘dump’ rapidly into the Gulf of Mexico, raising the earth’s oceans so rapidly, that the East Coast will disappear in a matter of minutes. There is also an undersea volcano off the Northwest coast of Africa that could have the same effect on the East Coast. He has info about this on his blog, as well, but I’ll let you dig for it: https://www.dutchsinse.com I assure that it is there.
